Edmonton weather: Merry wine Wednesday — what are you drinking?

A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.

It looks a little like winter out there this morning but I’m hopeful it won’t stick around too long. The forecast is calling for sunshine and decent temperatures in the next few days.

When it’s feeling chilly like this it makes me think of red wines more than whites or rosé. Today I think I’ll talk about one of my favourite old world locations. Rioja Spain. The red wines that come from this region are typically made from a blend of grapes. Most commonly Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache in France), Graciano and Mazuelo.

One of the best parts of Rioja is the law for winemaking sets the bare minimum aging requirements. The wines come in 4 different classifications Joven, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. These classifications relate specifically to the amount of time they are required to age in oak and bottle before being released for sale. When you buy a wine from Rioja it is ready to drink immediately because all the aging has been done for you.

A Joven requires no aging. A Crianza is required to age two years with six months of that in oak. A Reserva is required to age three years before retail and must have spent 12 months in oak and a Gran Reserva is aged for five years and is required to spend 18 months in oak. They will often exceed these minimums.

They are truly wonderful wines and I love that the producers do so much of the work for you. The laws make it very easy to understand the winemaking that goes into these wines and what you receive is truly an expression of the heritage of the region.

Do you have a favourite wine from Rioja? Let me know. I’m always interested in trying something new.
