Alberta RCMP major crimes unit confirmed in a press release Saturday it has charged Robert Keith Major with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of indignity to human remains.

On Thursday at around 6 p.m. officers responded to a report of a missing mother and child last seen in Hinton. On Friday RCMP confirmed they had found the two deceased.

RCMP said Major lived in the same apartment complex as the two victims but no other connection between them was identified, and police are not looking for any other suspects.

Major was remanded into custody and is scheduled to make an appearance in Edson provincial court on Sept. 21.

Autopsies are taking place Saturday and Sunday.

“This tragic loss of life is incredibly difficult for all involved, especially the family of the victims,” RCMP said in Saturday’s release.

The family has asked for privacy and the names of the victims will not be released.

Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Hinton RCMP 780-865-2455 or Crimestoppers 1-800-222-8477.
