Breaking news on Wednesday morning that Edmonton Oilers have traded defenceman Ethan Bear to Carolina Hurricanes in return for forward Warren Foegele.
It’s unknown as yet if there may be more components to the trade.
In Bear, the Oilers had a 24-year-old right shot defender with 132 games of NHL experience, a reasonable contract, and a bright future. That future will now be realized elsewhere.
Foegele, 25, is a two-way left winger who pencils in to the third line, a similar role that he held with the Hurricanes. He arrives with 200 games of NHL experience, which includes three seasons of double-digit goals. In 2021 he scored 10-10-20, +4 in 53 games, playing just over 14 minutes per game. Most of that action was at even strength, with just over 1 minute per game on the penalty kill.
The 6’2, 198 pounder is a (qualified) restricted free agent with a platform of $2.15 million and an interesting negotiation to come.
More to come.
