A horse was put down after an accident during the final heat of the North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships in Red Deer Saturday evening.
In a statement released Sunday, Wagons at Westerner, the host of the weekend chuckwagon event, said one of the horses lost stride causing the wagon to stop suddenly, impacting the chuckwagon behind as well.
An onsite veterinarian attended immediately and due to the injuries sustained, one of the horses was euthanized. It was determined a “muscular-skeletal event occurred.”
All other animals were assessed after the race and deemed to be in good health. Neither chuckwagon driver was injured.
“Alberta Professional Chuckwagon & Chariot Association and Westerner Park are committed to the safety of the drivers and their animals, ensuring the utmost animal welfare standards are adhered to,” reads the statement from Wagons at Westerner.
“Every possible precaution is taken to ensure the animal’s safety and wellbeing.”
