Edmonton Oilers trade down two spots, add late third round pick

Article content

With hotshot goalie Jesper Wallstedt still on the board, the Edmonton Oilers traded their first round pick, #20 overall, to Minnesota Wild in return for pick #22 as well as #90 tomorrow afternoon.

The additional pick will help fill a shortfall of selections in this year’s draft. What will they do with the #22? We’ll know momentarily.

What they won’t do is pick Wallstedt. Minnesota used the selection obtained from the Oilers to select the Swedish stopper, who was ranked well above #20 across the board.

Missed opportunity? Or crafty move to add more depth in the draft? Maybe an addition to resolve the Zach Hyman situation? No doubt opinions will vary across Oil Country, as they are wont to do.

More to come.
