Edmonton weather: Wine Wednesday — what are you drinking?

A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.

The weather has been absolutely amazing this week which means I’m dreaming of spending time out on the deck and enjoying the sunshine. This also means I’m thinking of a wine that is lighter and does well chilled.

I’m fairly new in my journey into the world of rosé. For a long time, I just couldn’t find anything that was interesting. Wading through super sweet and fruity styles or finding something that was so tart I equated it to sour water. I eventually just stopped trying. I was strictly red or white. Rosé? No way! But, in the last year, after working at a local wine shop I decided to try again. In my search, I have found a few that have become personal favourites. I tend to enjoy them made in a dry and fruity style with a good punch of acidity and something to add some complexity.

This wine made in Austria is a wonderful example of something fun and a little different. Blaufränkisch is a dark-skinned grape with roots in Austria and Germany. It produces wines with some similar notes to Pinot Noir, yet there is something slightly special about it that keeps me coming back from more. It is a grape that I have had in red form and enjoyed, so when I was urged to try it as a rosé I was intrigued.

It has flavours of strawberry, raspberry, pink grapefruit with notes of honey, ginger and a pleasant minerality that adds some complexity to the palate. This wine is fruity, delicious and refreshing. This wine is meant for a beautiful day on the deck.
