Hero Material continues: The second of four windows at the Varscona Theatre is up, paying tribute to Canadian women, legendary costumer Leona Brausen’s dream given from. Following Viola Desmond, this time in sartorial form, it’s that wonderful weirdo Emily Carr, who Brausen has both mimicked in representative costume (including smock with an impressionistic monkey on her back), and as a clothes-sculptured version of one of Carr’s famous vertical landscape paintings, Red Cedar, using 1940s dressing gowns. Such a great project, go have a look at night. Next up is Buffy Sainte-Marie, including jewelry made by Nikawiy Handmade — we’ll remind you in May!
Details: Through April at Varscona Theatre (10329 83 Ave.), no charge
Jay Sparrow does NFT: Edmonton singer-songwriter Jay Sparrow is entering the brave new world of non-fungible tokens by auctioning off one block-chain NFT (and, more tangibly, a digital download) of a direct-to-vinyl-recorded single of his song Cold Winter Song — grabbed at Jack White’s Third Man records in Nashville, using a 1947 Voice-O-Graph recorder to cut to acetate. In a broad mix of old and new, Sparrow notes the new recording of his 2012 song, “sounds warbly and scratchy, like it was recorded in the 1940s or even earlier. We could smell the vinyl fumes as we were playing. So I wanted to bring this ancient artifact to the most modern marketplace. No one’s ever heard the song, I’m not going to release it anywhere else, and there will only be one NFT — so whoever buys it will be able to decide if anyone else can listen to it.” Want in?
