Nineteen Edmonton coworkers are splitting a $1-million lotto jackpot after playing together twice a week for the past 10 years.
A highlight of the win for group organizer Richard Dempsey was phoning his coworkers to tell them the team had finally won big, said a Tuesday press release from Western Canada Lottery Corporation.
“The most fun thing of all was phoning everybody. Two of them always harass me jokingly that they’re always giving me money and want to know when the call is going to come that I’m giving them money,” he laughed, while recently claiming the prize on behalf of the group. “Well … I got to make that call.”
The group exactly matched a winning Guaranteed Prize Draw number on their LOTTO 6/49 ticket for the Aug. 26 draw.
Dempsey bought the group’s winning ticket at Andy’s IGA, 9106 142 St., a few days before the draw — the same place he found out about the win while using the ticket checker a couple of days after the draw.
“When I scanned it, my brain wasn’t taking in what my eyes were telling it,” Dempsey recalled.
He scanned the winning ticket three times before asking the cashier to come verify what he was seeing.
“She said, ‘Rick … that’s a million dollars,’ ” Dempsey chuckled. “We were pretty excited.”
If split evenly, the share would be about $52,631 each.
Dempsey said there’s “nothing crazy” planned for his cut of the win — maybe a new vehicle, maybe paying down his mortgage, maybe a trip somewhere when it’s safer to travel.
“I might go somewhere nice for a couple of weeks — I know some of the other group members want to do something like that,” he noted. “But first … it’s going to sit in my bank account so I can just look at it for a while.”
The winning group also includes Colin May; Kenneth May; Gary Chudoba; Michelle Chudoba; Jacques Hudon; Herman Crowell; Garnet Rose; Morris Kimball; Thomas Graham; Lisa Dye; Candice Crowell; Robert McCheyne; Brad Kamal; Harold Heighington; Thomas Chiles; Edward Mills; Terrence Young and Jody Hurdman.
