The upstairs patio pigeons might not like it, but Edmonton’s great, downtown art hub, the Art Gallery of Alberta, is finally reopening its glass doors June 19 for the first time since December.

Members and guests can pre-book online reservations at youraga.ca, starting with a Members’ Preview Day next Saturday — the first chance to see shows like The Scene, featuring a number of local artists; Every Black Day; Anna Hawkins: Blue Light Blue; and Comelia Hahn Oberlander: Genius Loci.

In the atrium, we’ll also have the chance to take in Damian Moppet’s hanging Untitled Abstract Drawing in Space, and, most excitingly, encounter Jude Griebel’s imposing Barn Skull sculpture in Manning Hall.

Then, on Sunday, June 20 — celebrating June’s National Indigenous History Month and that Monday’s National Indigenous Peoples Day — the gallery will be free to the public on its first open-to-everyone day. In remembrance of the 215 children’s graves recently uncovered out west, its central column will be illuminated orange.

The gallery is also celebrating Pride Month with a number of panels, including one presented by The Pride Centre of Edmonton at 7 p.m. June 24 and The Art of Drag with BOA from Canada’s Drag Race, 2 p.m. June 29.

Starting June 24, AGA’s regular hours will be Thursday to Saturday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., extended to 7 p.m. Thursdays.
